Shirvan protects a stretch of flat Caspian semi-desert and coastal lagoon south of Baku — the country’s stronghold for the goitered gazelle, or ceyran, which graze here in the thousands.
It is a wildlife-watching park: slow drives across the steppe to find gazelle, jackal and tortoise, and birdwatching on the lagoons. Summers are fierce, so the cooler half of the year is the time to visit.
