Spa & baths
The Caucasus bathing tradition runs deep — sulphur springs under old Tbilisi, hammams in Baku and mountain wellness. Here's what's worth trying.
Georgia
Georgia is bathing country. Tbilisi is literally named for its hot springs — t’bili means warm — and the domed sulphur baths of Abanotubani have been the city’s ritual for centuries. Beyond them lie mineral spa towns, forest sanatoria and a new wave of hotel wellness. Here is how we build the bathing days.
The old-town cluster of domed brick bathhouses fed by natural sulphur springs. Book a private room with a hot pool, then the traditional kisa scrub and soap-bubble massage by a mekise.
The photogenic blue-tiled “mosque” bathhouse — the most beautiful private rooms in the district, worth reserving ahead for couples.
The famous carbonated mineral water, spring-fed pools in the central park and a cluster of sanatoria and spa hotels in the pine valley.
Tskaltubo’s radon-carbonate waters drew Soviet leaders to grand bath-houses; Sairme’s mineral springs feed a modern wellness resort in the hills.
The rituals
- Kisa scrub. A vigorous full-body exfoliation with a coarse mitt — the heart of the Georgian bath ritual.
- Soap-foam massage. Mountains of warm soap bubbles worked over the body after the scrub — relaxing and deeply cleansing.
- Mineral soak. Long immersion in naturally warm sulphur or carbonate water, said to ease joints, skin and the after-effects of a long trek.

Azerbaijan
Azerbaijan’s bathing tradition runs from the naphthalan crude-oil spas of the west to the mountain hammams and the mineral springs of the Greater Caucasus. Baku adds a layer of polished hotel wellness on the Caspian shore. Here is how we build the spa days.
The town built on medicinal naphthalan crude oil — warm oil baths prescribed for skin and joints, offered at dedicated sanatoria found nowhere else in the world.
Restored stone bath-houses in the old towns — steam, a black-soap scrub and rest rooms under domed ceilings.
A mineral-water resort in the northern foothills famous for its Badamli-type springs, with modern treatment wings and forest air.
The Caspian-front five-stars run full spas — hammam circuits, indoor pools and Caspian-view treatment rooms — an easy add-on to a city stay.
The rituals
- Kisa / black-soap scrub. The hammam exfoliation with a coarse mitt and olive-based soap, finished with warm rinses.
- Naphthalan oil bath. A supervised warm-oil immersion at the Naftalan sanatoria, traditionally taken as a short medicinal course.
- Mineral soak & steam. Spring-water pools and steam rooms at the mountain resorts, easing joints after a day in the hills.
