Spring in Georgia

The valleys turn green, monasteries wake from winter and the first mountain passes reopen. Mild days, few crowds and the best light of the year.

Weather
12–22°C lowlands
Crowds
Low
Best for
Wine, culture, blossoms
Note
High passes still closed

Spring is Georgia at its freshest — orchards in blossom, rivers running high with snowmelt and the lowland trails carpeted in wildflowers. It is the quiet shoulder season: hotel rates are gentle, the wine cellars are calm, and by May the lower Caucasus valleys are open for walking. High passes like the Abano and Tusheti are still closed, so spring is a season for Kakheti, the cave cities, Tbilisi and the green foothills rather than the high mountains.

Season highlights
  • Wildflowers in the Truso and Dariali gorges
  • Blossom and calm cellars in Kakheti wine country
  • Easter (Aghdgoma) — the most atmospheric feast of the year
  • David Gareja and Vardzia before the summer heat
