A resort in the foothills

Gabala (Qabala), in the wooded foothills of the Greater Caucasus, is Azerbaijan's best-known mountain resort — cool, green and popular in summer for the air and in winter for the snow. It's an easy pairing with Sheki on a north-western loop from Baku.

What to do

The Tufandag cable car climbs into the mountains for views and, in season, skiing; Nohur Lake is a calm spot for a walk or a boat; and the ruins of ancient Gabala nearby speak to the area's long history. There's wine country close by, too.

When to go

Summer is peak for the cool mountain air and greenery, especially for Gulf families escaping the heat; winter brings skiing at Tufandag. We build Gabala into a wider Azerbaijan trip and match the season to what you want.
